Description

This trip focuses on Peru's Incan history with the highlight being Machu Picchu. It will include tours in Lima's Historic Center (a World Heritage site) and archeological sites around Cuzco and in the Sacred Valley. In addition to learning about Incan and Spanish history in the areas, you'll visit local weavers and learn about traditional Incan spinning and dyeing of llama wool and the weaving of their colorful fabrics. You'll be amazed to learn about the 4000 varieties of potatoes cultivated in Peru for thousands of years in different forms, colors and flavors. You'll visit colorful markets with local foods and handcrafts.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Arrive in Lima, transfer to hotel. Dine with your hosts at a welcome dinner of traditional Peruvian dishes at Panchita (included). Area activities include, walking to and visiting the incredible Huaca Pucllana pre-Incan pyramid build with mud bricks ($5/US entry) and seeing the cats and street vendors in Kennedy Park.
  • Day 2 - Walking tour of Lima’s Historic Center (a World Heritage Site), including the Presidential Palace, Monasterio de San Francisco catacombs, La Merced Church, and learn about Conquistador Francisco Pizarro.
  • Day 3 - Early morning flight to Cusco and transportation to hotel. You are on your own for the remainder of the day to explore Cuzco’s Town Square, museums (including the amazing Q’oricancha), cathedral, and other historical buildings. Be sure to visit the souvenir/food market, shops, and try out a restaurant around the Square.
  • Day 4 - Locally guided tour of the religious Incan ruins around Cuzco, including Sacsayhuaman with its giant stone blocks set together without mortar.
  • Day 5 -Travel through the Sacred Valley with a local guide and, as time permits, visit with traditional Incan weavers and see other archeological sites along the way. Arrive at Ollantaytambo hotel. Explore this quaint Incan town on your own that includes the ChocoMuseo and souvenir market.
  • Day 6 - Early morning train ride to Aguas Calientes. Board bus for 20-minute ride up the mountain to Machu Picchu for a locally guided tour. Return to Ollantaytambo in the afternoon on the train.
  • Day 7- Tour Ollantaytambo archeological site with a local guide. Return to Cuzco through the Sacred Valley and see more picturesque towns and sites.
  • Day 8- Cuzco free day to tour on your own any museums, historical sites, and markets you haven’t seen or to just relax!
  • Day 9- Return flight to Lima and on to the US.

Things to Consider

  • Many places on the trip are high altitude (Cuzco 11,152 ft and Machu Picchu 7,972 ft) and can cause altitude sickness. Please contact your physician to discuss any health issues before you book your travel.
  • Participants must be able to walk several miles without issues. Note: Peru is not ADA-compliant. Most activities, archeological sites, and transportation are not wheelchair accessible as most streets have no sidewalk, roadways/paths can be uneven/not paved, and most hotels/buildings will not have elevators.
  • Full passport information is required at the time of deposit. Passport must be valid for 6 months after final date of the trip and have at least 4 blank pages.
